Christmas inMadrid 2006 |
![]() |
The small village of Madrid New Mexico was a coal mining town from late in the 19th through the middle of the 20th century. During the latter period the coal company sponsored a lavish Christmas display each year using the "spare time" of the miners. These displays became world famous. People came from far and wide to see the lights and other displays. Airlines altered their routes to give passengers a view. Legend has it that Walt Disney got the idea for his electric light parade during a visit. Click Here to see this year's winners |

The mines closed in 1954 and Madrid became a ghost town for about 20 years. Some hardy folks came to Madrid in the 70's to make their homes and to create new businesses. Relatively early on the residents decided to recreate the Christmas experience for visitors. This year is the 24th annual Christmas Open House in Madrid. Please come and visit our village and see what this is all about. |
